South Jeffco Game

November 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Hey Everyone,

Well the weather finally jumped up and bit us as this game was pushed back by one week.  This day was a great day for football although I bet the boys wouldn’t have minded playing in the snow last weekend.

What a great game by two evenly matched teams!  The boys played very well with the difference being two extra points that the Bulldogs scored and the two that we did not score.  14-12, thats pretty evenly matched!

We knew this would be a good game as this SJ team had waited almost an entire year to meet us after we beat them in the Carnation Bowl last year.  I will take nothing away from this SJ team as they are very well coached and have great kids on their team just as we do.  There was great effort shown by both teams on both sides of the ball.  This game came down to field position and who made the fewest mistakes.  Unfortunately we lost the field position battle and we had one mistake on kickoff return. Who would have thought that ball would stop and go sideways on that kick?  Crazy!

The defense made a tremendous goal line stand to keep us in the game and give us a chance.  We moved the ball to mid field but could not convert on the 4th down play and all that was left was for SJ to take a knee.

Overall the boys played well and put up a good fight.  There are many positives to take away from a game like this and we will learn from both the positives and negatives and move forward.  The season goes on and we will continue to work hard with the boys.  We may get another chance at this SJ team later this year and we look forward to whats ahead of us.

As a coach we see many things during the game and on game film.  This game film helps us to teach the kids and is a valuable tool used to help the kids get better.  As a coach I also have the opportunity to see what plays I call and learn from the things I see that I do.  This may have been the weakest game I’ve called offensively all year.  I will learn from it, move forward, and get better!

I’m very proud of the boys of Eagles Football.  They showed great heart and determination.  They should hold their heads high even in defeat!  We will move forward and get better!

Remember boys, get better everyday in everything you do, school, at home, and football.  Honor your parents, respect your teachers, fellow classmates, and coaches.  Be a good example to others everyday!  This is all we ask.

Highlands Ranch Game

November 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Hey Everyone,

Wow!  The boys played a great game today and once again we were blessed with great weather.  This was a big game for the Eagles as we played a very good football team that was 4-0.  This team handled the BC Bison last week to the tune of 25-12.  The same Bison team that beat us in week one in overtime!

Our boys came out fired up and ready to play and things started out with a touchdown on the opening play by Tony Cass. This game looked like it would be a blow out as we led 20-0 with one play left in the first half.  Unfortunately the Mustangs turned that one play into a touchdown as they returned the kick for a score.  Then Highlands Ranch found a play that worked against our defense on the following extra point.  The Mustangs scored on the opening drive of the second half and we had a ball game on our hands.  That score made it a one score game and it was game on!

Fortunately our boys were up to the task as they did not let up and answered with a score of their own.  Once again the Mustangs answered back with a score and we were back to a one score game.  Coach Cass made a slight defensive adjustment at that point and the boys were able to shut HR down for the rest of the game.

This was our best game of the year offensively and defensively.  The boys continually shut down the Mustangs, created turnovers, and had countless tackles for loss along with an interception.  Offensively Jack Thiele stepped up.  I was very proud of Jack as I challenged him to have a break out game offensively and he most definitely responded!  He continually found room inside and outside as the O-line performed beautifully!  O-line remember, this offense doesn’t run without you guys up front opening holes for the running backs.   When a running back scores I want you to know its because you did your job!  Great Job O-line!!

We had many boys contribute throughout this game as Liam Spaw continues to make the most of his limited carries.  It seems when Liam is called upon he usually turns in positive yards when he gets his chance.  The Bowen boys show up often on the game film with Troy making special teams tackles and Kyle making the most out of his opportunity at LB.  Kyle was in the backfield often making tackles for loss as Coach Cass seemed to have the right “stunt” called for Kyle at the right time.  Overall I was very satisfied with the outcome and how the boys performed!  If we meet this team again we will not kick it to number 40.  That kid was tough and hard to bring down!

This was a big win for the Eagles and I’m very proud of all of them.  This may have been one of the few times we may have been considered the under dogs and the boys met that challenge with great emotion and heart.  Its fun to see how excited they all were once the game was over as they ran off the field.

No time for rest as this week we will begin preparing for a very tough South Jeffco team.  The same team we beat in last years Carnation Bowl.  You know they will be up to play us and get their 2nd chance.  It should be a great match up between two great teams!

Remember boys, get better everyday in everything you do, at home, in school, and on the football field.  Honor your parents, respect your teachers, fellow classmates, and coaches.  Be a good example to others everyday!  This is all we ask of you.

Lakewood Game

November 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Hey Everyone,

We have been blessed with some great weather this year for our games.  Other than some wind today the weather was great!  Hopefully we do not get bit later in the year with all this good weather early.

First I would like to take this time to thank everyone for all the cards my family and I have received.  Also I must thank you all for the beautiful flower arrangement that the Arvada Eagles sent to my fathers service.  They were, in my opinion, the most beautiful flowers at my dads service.  Made me cry, but as you all know thats not hard to do!  Many thanks to all of you and the support you have shown my family and I during this time.

Now on to the game.

I thought the pre game with the Lakewood boys, coaches, and familes was very special.  Keith Hufford, the Lakewood coach, and I have become friends over the last year and we agreed that it would be a nice touch to say the pledge with everyone prior to the game.  We were hoping to do it on the field but do to the fact that the games were running late we made it work on the sideline.  I thought it was a nice touch and show of sportsmanship as we honored our flag.

Once again the boys continue to show improvement each week.  We had all 21 kids at this game as all have returned from various events.  If you recall we only had 17 of the 21 last week so it was nice to have the whole team together this week.

The defense continues to dominate as they had their second consecutive shut out.  The going was tough for Lakewood the entire game as the defense kept the pressure on.  Our defense continually gave the ball back to the offense with a short field to work with.  Because of this we were able to score quickly and put Lakewood in a hole early.  The entire defense played great and I’m very proud of them!

Offensively we had a good game as well.  You don’t win 33-0 and not play well!  O-line did a great job opening up holes for the running backs as we seemed to be able to run inside all day!  The 3 back was more involved today as we continue to establish more “threats” in the back field.  I believe we have a great group of running backs that can get the job done.  We were able to rotate kids more aggressively today and get some of the other boys carries as well.  Bradyn Dewitt and Liam Spaw did a nice job of carrying the ball along with Brian Deasy when they were called upon.  Liam was able to find the end zone twice on this day as he took advantage of his opportunity.  Nice job Liam!!  If there was one down side to the offense we seemed to have some trouble holding onto the ball.  We put the ball on the ground several times and lost two of the fumbles.  We will work on that in the future!

This story would not be complete if I did not mention that Ryan Bruening had a special teams touch down as well.  Ryan plays defensive tackle and Lakewood attempted a punt into the wind.  The ball went straight up and by the looks of it on the video, Ryan was the only one that saw the ball.  He fielded it on one hop, in traffic, and stepped into the endzone for his first career touch down.  Great job Ryan!

As the season moves forward we will continue to develop the kids.  We have already seen great improvement in many of them.  Again, we are throwing a lot at these 8 year olds and its amazing how much they pick up.  It is fun to be off the field calling the plays from the sideline and watching the boys execute the plays they have learned.  Believe it or not we are up to 52 plays at our disposal at this time.  I can’t even tell you how many different blocking schemes, 6 or 8 at this time I think!  Defensively Rich is making the defense calls and stunts using hand signals to Colten.  Some are actually sign language that Jared Lukowicz has taught us!  This is fun!

Overall the boys are playing good football and it is our goal to help them to continue to improve.

Remember boys.  Get better everyday in everything you do, home, school, and even football.  Honor your parents, respect your teachers, fellow classmates, and coaches.  Be a good example to others everyday!  This is all we ask.

Great Job Boys, I’m proud of all of you!

Green Mountain Game

November 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Hey Everyone,

Once again we had a great day of football weather.  A bit warmer than last week, but most definitely a beautiful day for football.

The boys came out after their victory last week and put together a very complete game this week.  All phases of the game worked very well.  Offense, defense, and special teams all performed very well this week.

Obviously, when the defense has a shut out we know they have performed well.  They did it in dominating fashion giving up very few yards to Green Mountain.  When you consider we had boys playing positions for the first time it becomes even more impressive.  Jim Gassman and Calvin Hunt made the switch from line backer this week to start at corner back.  Both made the transition very well considering they had very little practice at those positions prior to the game.  I expect them to get better and feel more comfortable in their new positions as the year goes on.  As always the D-line continues to impress and the line backers are becoming more aggressive.  Zach Lingk had a very good game at LB as he continues to make his presence felt.

Offense put up 40 points this game which is their highest point total of the year!  Each week we put in at least one new play and this week that play was Big Mama Right 18 Stretch.  The boys love it and it was effective.  Colten scored on the first play of the game running Big Mama Right.  We ran it two more times in the game with great success.  Jack Thiele continues to improve and showed he has speed as well as he scored the second TD of the game.  Zach Lingk got into the mix scoring on a tough run up the middle.  Tony, as usual made his presence felt scoring two offensive TD’s and had a punt return for a touchdown as he streaked up the sideline to go the distance.

You may have noticed during the course of the game that I came off the field early in the second quarter and Rich followed suit in the fourth.  This is the last game that coaches are allowed on the field.  From this point on we will be calling plays from the sideline.  I attribute some of the sloppy 3rd quarter play, offensively, to that transition.  Overall I felt it went very well, coach and QB just need to learn how to communicate a little better.

We will continue to work with the boys and their blocking assignments.  AJ will be making the line calls from his wrist band which coincides with Colten’s.  We are starting to play real football with no coaches on the field!  New plays will be incorporated weekly which means more learning for the boys and coaches alike.  We look forward to what is yet to come!

Remember boys, get better every day, at home and in school.  Honor your parents, respect your teachers, fellow classmates, and coaches.  Be a good example to others every day!

9/12 Game Eagles -vs- Bears

October 7, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Hey Everyone,

Saturday was a great day for football and a great afternoon for the boys of Eagles Football!  There was definitely a hint of football weather in the air, overcast, cool, and a little rain.  Perfect football weather to keep the boys fresh and cool.

The boys overcame a slow start in the first half and BC’s second half scoring drive to later dominate the game.  The O-line started opening up holes in the second half and Tony found them!  The first half was a bit slow although the boys put together a great scoring drive on their second possession.  I believe we burned 10 plays on that drive that ended in a touch down pass to Tony.  The key play on the drive was a 4th down conversion when Colten found Timmy Ritter open on the right side and completed the pass for a first down.  Zach Lingk showed some toughness gaining tough yards up the middle and Jack Thiele made some nice runs throughout the game as well.

This week we have focused on blocking assignments and defensive “jobs”.  Watching the game film continues to show us many things we need to work on.  Blocking assignments is definitely one that is high on the priority list.  Not only with the O-line kids but also with the running backs as well.  I believe we have much of this ironed out for the upcoming game with Green Mountain but as we all know not all defenses play the same!  We will also continue to work on running better pass routes with both the backs and tight ends as we look to incorporate more of the passing game as the year goes on.

This is a good group of boys and we continue to see improvement in all of them.  We have six weeks of practice behind us and all of the boys are showing much improvement.  We will continue to get better as the season moves forward.

Remember boys, this is all we ask of you.  Get better everyday in everything you do!  Honor your parents, respect your teachers, fellow classmates, and coaches.  Be a good example to others everyday!

9/5 Game Eagles -vs- BC Bisons

September 6, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Hey Everyone,

Wow!  Sounds like the great, hard fought game we thought it would be!  Wish I was there but I was being kept up to speed via text message. Sounds as though the kids responded well after they found out this was the BC3 team that had so much trouble last year.  I trust the coaches, parents, and kids of BC where well behaved this year.  From the feed back I’ve been getting it sounds that way.

Tough one to lose.  Even though I wasn’t there I was very proud of the boys as it sounded like they fought hard.  Once they went down at the end of the first half it was time for them to show what they were made of and they did.  To come back and take the lead into the fourth quarter is a huge deal.  All we can ask is to have a chance to win late in the fourth and that opportunity was there!  We just didn’t finish the deal but there was great effort by all.  I believe we will meet this team again later in the year and we will get another shot, hopefully the outcome will be different.  This BC team is a good team and I see the makings of a friendly rivalry.  Last year I don’t believe I could have used the word friendly but I believe things have changed.  Its a new year for us and them.

As usual, I’m sure the coaches saw many things we need to work on to continue getting better.  We will address those things this week beginning on Tuesday.  Hopefully I will be back on Monday and will be looking at game film Monday night!  (no pressure Rick)

I’m proud of the boys as this game could have been close, as it was, or because of the intimidation factor the boys felt from this team, it could have gone bad.  The boys stepped over a big hurdle today even though it ended in a lose.  They over came the intimidation factor and now they know that they need not be intimidated by anyone!  We also have a group of good, tough, football players!  Hold your heads high boys, practice like a champion, play like a champion, and act like a champion!!

Remember boys, get better in everything you do. Get better in school and on the football field.  Honor your parents, respect your teachers, fellow classmates and coaches.  Be a good example to others!
